Most of you have probably never heard of Shilajit, which is why you participate in 61,000 monthly Google searches asking what Shilajit is, its benefits, and how Shilajit works. Shilajit is an ancient Ayurvedic herb used in traditional herbal medicine for various ailments. You’ve probably never heard of it, as it’s only found at 10,000 meters above sea level.
Believe it or not, even to find Shirajit in the wild, you’d have to cross Tibet, the Himalayas, or the Altai Mountains. Shilajit is a resin that contains an important compound called fulvic acid, rich in over 84 minerals, found in rock crevices at altitudes where disease is most likely to occur.
Before we get into the benefits of Shilajit, it’s important to note that most studies have only used animal studies for their evaluations. Few human clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the benefits of Shilajit. Currently, the only human study conducted has used 200 mg of shilajit with 50% fulvic acid in two divided doses for 90 days.
Research on the benefits of Shilajit is limited, with most looking at health conditions such as anemia, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and cardiovascular health.
Recently, however, the number of clinical studies evaluating the effects of shilajit in humans has increased.
Some studies have found that Shilajit can increase testosterone levels. Testosterone is an important male and female hormone that controls mood, body composition, and overall vitality.
Double-blind placebo-controlled trials published in journals Andrology The effect on testosterone was assessed in healthy participants aged 45 to 55 years. Results showed that a 250 mg Shilajit 90-day regimen increased total testosterone, free testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS) compared to placebo (R).
Another study examined spermatogenic activity in 60 infertile men and found that after 90 days, more than 60% of study participants showed an increase in total sperm count and more than 12% had increased sperm motility. However, it is noteworthy that only 28 patients completed the treatment protocol (R).
It only makes sense that Shilajit brings up the health benefits of helping with altitude sickness. I mean, it lives in the cloud.
Altitude sickness is triggered by reduced oxygen levels at high altitudes and can cause a range of symptoms.
Fulvic acid found in Shilajit acts as an antioxidant, protecting your body from external elements and improving your body’s immune system and memory. It also boosts energy and is a diuretic that helps remove excess fluid from the body. Therefore, the researchers believe that Shilajit may be able to counteract the symptoms associated with high altitude. Of course, none of this has really been proven, as no studies have replicated these findings.
A study published in the journal Cardiovascular Toxicology evaluated the cardioprotective effects of mummification (shilajit) against experimental myocardial injury in rats.
The animals were divided into two groups, one group received 250 mg and the other group received 500 mg for 7 days, and each group consisted of two subgroups – those with and without heart damage.
Treatment had no significant effect on hemodynamic and cardiac indices in normal animals. However, when cardiac injury was induced, Shilajit maintained and attenuated serum cardiac troponin I and reduced the severity of cardiac injury. Despite this slight difference, it is not sufficient to recommend as a potential treatment or for further etiological evaluation (R).
Considering that Shilajit has not been well studied and lacks evidence to support its use in clinical settings, Shilajit may have potential side effects.
