Our bodies need multivitamins and minerals to get the essential nutrients they need to function properly every day. Most people get these nutrients through a balanced and varied diet, but you can also take additional vitamin and mineral supplements to boost certain levels of specific nutrients. You should seek advice on taking supplements where appropriate, for example if you are deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral.
In this blog, we’ll look at the different vitamins and minerals our bodies need, where we can get them and what they do.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A helps our immune system work properly, keeps our skin healthy and helps maintain vision in dim light. Foods rich in vitamin A include: cheese, oily fish, eggs, carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes and apricots.
B vitamins and folic acid
There are many different types of B vitamins that boost energy production and boost the body’s immune system. From thiamine (also known as vitamin B1) to vitamin B12, these key nutrients are found in a variety of foods. From meat and eggs to vegetables like broccoli and potatoes, B vitamins are an important group of nutrients our bodies need.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C has many important functions, including helping to keep cells, skin, blood vessels and bones healthy, and helping wounds heal. Foods rich in vitamin C include fruits and vegetables such as oranges, strawberries and broccoli, sprouts and potatoes.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D helps regulate the levels of phosphate and calcium in our bodies and is therefore needed to keep our teeth, bones and muscles healthy. Foods that contain high amounts of vitamin D include egg yolks, red meat, liver and fortified foods such as fat spreads.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E, found in a range of foods including nuts and seeds, wheat germ and olive oil, helps keep eyes and skin healthy and boosts the immune system to fight off disease and infection.
Vitamin K
Vitamin K helps wounds heal in the right way and is necessary for blood clotting. It’s found in vegetable oils, green leafy vegetables, and grains.
calcium
In addition to helping strengthen bones and teeth, calcium also regulates muscle contraction. It can be found in many different foods, including milk, cheese nuts, soybeans, and green leafy vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage.
iron
Iron is important for the function of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body, and can be found in foods such as meat, nuts, beans, and dried fruits like apricots.
